Sam Smith and Kim Petras have collaborated on a new song called “Unholy.” You can hear it below. Smith’s upcoming fourth studio album has a pulsating, synth-heavy collaboration as the lead song. Its choral hook reads, “Mummy don’t know daddy’s getting hot/ At the body shop/ Doing something Unholy.”
“‘Unholy’ was recorded in Jamaica and was one of the most amazing creative moments I’ve ever experienced as an artist,” Smith said of the song. “I’ve never had so much joy recording a song.”
“Unholy,” off Smith’s upcoming album, beat out new tracks from Lil Nas X (“Star Walkin'”), GloRilla featuring Cardi B (“Tomorrow 2”), Joshua Bassett (Sad Songs in a Hotel Room), Kelsea Ballerini (Subject to Change), and others.
“Unholy” is the next song off Smith’s yet-to-be-announced fourth studio album, which they told Billboard in an August cover story would be their “first non-heartbreak album” and would usher in a new, more cheerful sound for them. “I think joy is a dangerous place for me and a lot of queer people,” they stated. “We’re all masters of pain, and I believe it’s a very brave act to step into the strange delight of it all.”
Smith, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Blake Slatkin, Cirkut, Omer Fedi, and Jimmy Napes produced the new song, which marks a dramatic departure for Smith, with the almost sinister-sounding bass supplemented even further by a pounding club beat. Smith sings over the bass-heavy chorus, “Mummy don’t know daddy’s getting hot/ At the body shop/ Doing something unholy.”
With 21% of the vote, Lil Nas X’s new song “Star Walkin’,” the official anthem for the ongoing League of Legends World Championship, trailed “Unholy” in the fan-voted poll. The “other” category came in third with roughly 14% of the vote, followed by GloRilla’s “Tomorrow 2” featuring Cardi B, which received 8% of the vote.
