The competition in Hollywood is real. Many people with a passion for music have a goal to make a name for themselves in the industry, but how can you stand out among the crowd when the market is so oversaturated?
Spotify claims 60,000 songs are uploaded to their platform every day which alludes to approximately 22 million songs per year. While there are quite a few myth busters out there working to debunk this comment, you and I know anyone can upload their music at any time no matter how professional or unprofessional, no matter the genre, etc.
What this means is while there are many many people working to get out there and make a name for themselves, there’s an opportunity for you too. What are some things you can do to get started?
It’s more than the music
It’s great to have music, good start! There’s more to it than just the music. Who are you? What makes you unique? What makes you stand out?
About you
What is your story? Where do you come from? What challenges have you faced? What hardships have you experienced? People will look up to you; want to relate with you, be like you. It begins with the story you tell.
Team
A crucial part of the business is building your trusted partners to get you to the next level. Working together with someone(s) gives you a morale boost. It also helps to have a small team of people who not only has your back but are batting for you; helping you book shows, etc. As stated in the book “All About the Music Business”, consider hiring the following:
- Personal Manager
- Business Manager
- Booking Agent
- Marketing & Branding Advisor
- Entertainment Attorney
Events
Get your name and your face out there!
- Perform at open mic nights or local shows to work on your craft and build a fanbase
- Attend red carpet events where you can gain interview experience
- Get content for social media while you’re out
Learn
You may be someone who only sings, or only plays guitar. Maybe you only produce. The goal is to be versatile and have a few things up your sleeve to add more value to yourself for future opportunities.
If you sing, learn how to play an instrument. If you play piano, learn another instrument or how to produce. Whatever you feel called to, take the leap and don’t limit yourself.
Learning a new skill can bring more opportunities and financial abundance.
Social Media
Post! Utilizing social media platforms whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, or any other platform, is crucial as an independent artist. You are your own marketing team at the end of the day. Get yourself and your music out there by posting videos, pictures, whatever it is.
One thing we will suggest is gaining quality content. With the right angles and lighting anyone can take quality photos on a smartphone. However, investing in yourself by getting a professional photoshoot done will only look exceptional when an A&R or producer for example want to work with you. The professional look will take you a long way.
Get to work!
