Talented singer-songwriter Tabiyus comes originally from Alpharetta, GA and moved to Los Angeles to live out his dreams of building a successful career in the entertainment industry. There has never been any doubt in his mind what he is meant to do.
Los Angeles has “that energy and excitement that keeps me motivated and inspired” he explains about what living and working in Hollywood is like. Although Atlanta will always be his home, he loves being able to connect with other talented people and “explore new opportunities”.
Tabiyus’ name comes from his father’s side of the family who are from Monrovia, Liberia which makes it that much more meaningful to him. Traditionally “Tobias”, he changed the spelling to “Tabiyus” as his artist name to add a “unique touch” as he puts it because it resonates with his heritage and represents who he is as an artist.
We wanted to dive into who Tabiyus truly is as a visual, a creative, and his future plans as a music artist.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
Absolutely! My musical journey has played a significant role in shaping who I am as an artist today. From a young age, I was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences that have left a lasting impact on my sound. I had the privilege of learning the piano with an amazing Russian teacher named Anna, and I also immersed myself in the world of gospel music, thanks to the guidance of the talented Starling Jones at my dad’s church.
On top of my musical pursuits, I jumped headfirst into the realm of theater, taking part in over 60 productions. From plays to musicals like “The Crucible,” “Oklahoma,” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” I’ve had the opportunity to explore different storytelling mediums and express my artistry in various ways.
Growing up as a Black artist in the suburbs of Georgia, my experiences have undeniably influenced my artistic style. It’s a fusion of various genres, cultural influences, and personal experiences that come together to define my unique sound.
As I continue to grow and evolve as an artist, my goal is to share these diverse influences and connect with my audience on a deep level. I want my music to resonate with others who appreciate the journey of self-discovery and artistic expression.
So, you see, my upbringing, with its blend of musical and theatrical experiences, has played a pivotal role in shaping my sound and artistic vision.
What ultimately inspired you to dedicate yourself to a music career?
One day, while alone in the theater during my freshman year of high school, something hilarious happened. I started singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and Sisqo’s “Incomplete,” and to my surprise, I effortlessly hit those high notes. It was like a moment of pure magic, and I couldn’t believe the power and range I had discovered within my voice.
Then puberty came along and decided to play a little prank on me. It snatched away my voice and left me wondering what on earth had happened. Suddenly, those high notes became elusive, and I had to navigate the challenges of a changing voice like any other teenager.
It was a period of relearning and rediscovery, as I embraced the comical side of my journey. I had to find my voice all over again, going through the awkwardness and the uncertainty. It was like a humorous plot twist in the story of my musical aspirations. But that experience of having the gift of high notes, only to have them swiped by puberty, became a source of inspiration. It ignited a deep desire to push my vocal abilities as a male vocalist and immerse myself in the world of music.
This pursuit of mastering my voice, embracing its range, and exploring the depths of my capabilities has been a driving force behind my dedication to a music career. It’s a constant quest for improvement, infused with humor and resilience, as I strive to reach new heights. The journey of reclaiming those high notes and channeling them into my artistry is what ultimately inspired me to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to a music career.
What’s one reason you are passionate about music?
One of the main reasons I’m so passionate about music is because it allows me to tell a wide range of stories. Music has this amazing ability to convey different emotions and touch on various aspects of life. Whether it’s through sad songs, happy times, party anthems, or songs about love, faith, or even anger, music has the power to capture and express so many different feelings.
For me, being an artist means being a storyteller. I see music as a platform to share narratives and connect with people. Through my lyrics, I aim to paint vivid pictures and convey messages that resonate with listeners. I want my music to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and reflect the diverse experiences we go through as human beings.
I believe that music has the ability to reach deep within our hearts and souls. It can bring us joy, make us reflect, or even provide a sense of comfort during difficult times. When I create music, I want to tap into those emotions and create a genuine connection with my audience.
So, when you listen to my music, you can expect to hear a variety of stories. I’ll touch on different themes, explore different moods, and try to capture the essence of life through my songs. Whether it’s a song that makes you want to dance, think, or feel something deeply, I want my music to be relatable and meaningful to you.
Ultimately, my passion for music lies in the ability to share stories and connect with people on a personal level. It’s an incredible journey, and I’m excited to take you along with me as I continue to create.
Who in your life and your music has influenced you the most?
One of the most influential people in my life and music journey has been my friend Justin Gideon. Back in high school, he witnessed one of my performances and recognized my talent. He introduced me to his father, James Gideon, who is a producer based in Atlanta. Working with James allowed me to refine and develop my unique sound. They played a significant role in shaping my early musical endeavors.
In addition to Justin and James, my cousin Jylantee had a profound impact on my musical journey. He introduced me to the music of Daft Punk, which had a transformative effect on my artistic direction. Their innovative sound and creative approach inspired me and influenced the path I would take as an artist.
Reflecting on this now, it’s bittersweet because Justin is no longer with us. I cherish the memories we shared and the support he provided during those crucial moments in my development. It’s a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of appreciating those who have played a significant role in our journey.
I have a strong desire to reconnect with James Gideon, Justin’s father, who provided me with my first sessions in his recording booth. It’s important for me to pay a visit and express my gratitude for his belief in my talent and the opportunities he provided. The influence of these individuals, their guidance, and the experiences we shared have shaped me as an artist and continue to inspire me on my musical path. I’m grateful for their presence in my life and the impact they’ve had on my music.
Do you have a favorite moment so far in your career?
I had a really cool experience back in May 2021. So, I was meeting up with one of my mentors, Herman Flores, who’s a big deal in the dance world. We decided to grab some food at a restaurant in Pasadena. And you know who tagged along? My best friend Josiah Goering, the guy who was known for his epic mustache. You should totally Google him, he’s a character.
Anyway, we were just sitting there, chatting with Herman, when I decided to lay it out for Herman. I told him straight up that I was serious about pursuing my music career. And you know what he did? He invited us to this promo event where Ice Cube was performing. Yeah, Ice Cube (NWA, Friday lol).
We get to the promo event, and it’s lit. People are mingling, drinks are flowing, and Ice Cube takes the stage and kills it. The vibe was unreal. I was busy networking, sipping on some tequila, and eating pizza, not really thinking about anything else.
But here’s where things get wild. Out of the blue, Curtis, my manager at the time, and Herman turn to me and go, “You ready?” I’m like, “Ready for what?” And they hit me with it. They tell me I’m about to perform, right then and there, in front of everyone. I’m talking to executives including John Acunto who’s worked with everybody, industry folks, the whole swerve.
I had to gather my thoughts real quick. I mean, imagine going from chilling with your friends to being thrown on stage. But you know what they say, “Opportunity meets preparation.” So, there I am, rocking fresh cornrows, rocking a bright yellow banana shirt, and rocking black jeans and a chain. I hit that stage like I was born to do it.
At first, I think people were like, “What’s going on here?” But as soon as I started performing, something happened in the room. I had the crowd in the palm of my hand. They were blown away by what they were witnessing. It was a moment of pure connection and energy.
That night was a game-changer for me. It confirmed my belief that this music journey is my calling. The reaction and response from the audience was something I’ll never forget. It was like a fire was ignited inside me, and I knew right then and there that I was meant to be an artist.
So, yeah, that experience was a turning point. It reminded me why I do what I do and why I’m so passionate about it. It’s about making those connections, touching people’s lives with my music, and embracing every opportunity that comes my way.
What were you doing before music?
Before music took the center stage of my career, I was actively involved in various facets of the performing arts. I dedicated a significant season of my life to writing, directing, and producing film, media, music videos, events, and television. These creative endeavors allowed me to explore different aspects of the entertainment industry and develop my skills across multiple disciplines. While I continue to work in those areas, music has become the focal point and driving force of my artistic journey. It has taken the forefront of my passion and occupies a central role in shaping my creative path.
Tell us the name of the project you are currently promoting? What inspired this project?
The project I am currently promoting is titled “So,” which is one of my first international records produced by DJ Kalta. This project holds a special place in my heart as it represents an opportunity to showcase a different perspective on African music and its ability to blend and transcend genres. Through this project, I aim to provide a unique glimpse into the sound and style of an African artist, breaking boundaries and expanding horizons. It’s an exciting journey as I kickstart this year by establishing myself on the grassroots level of the international music circuit before bringing my artistry back to my Atlanta roots later in the year.
Is there a specific lyric on this track that speaks to you most?
The lyric that speaks to me the most on this track is the simple word “So.” Throughout my journey in the music industry, I’ve encountered numerous people who have tried to dictate who I should be, how I should act, and what path I should follow. Also The line at the top of the chorus “I cannot be worried ’bout nothing” resonates deeply with me because it captures my mindset and attitude towards all the industry politics, challenges, and distractions. With this track, it’s more about creating a vibe, capturing the essence of summer, and providing a space for people to let loose and have a good time. It’s about embracing the moment and staying true to myself.
Is there a hobby or business you do outside of music that you would like to share with us?
In addition, I am currently partnered with Fearless LA, where I have the opportunity to bring premier events to the city for both upcoming and established artists. It’s an exciting venture that allows me to showcase talented individuals and provide them with a platform to shine. Alongside event production, we also explore filming opportunities, capturing the essence of these experiences and sharing them with a wider audience. It’s a collaborative effort that merges my passion for music, film, and event production, creating memorable moments for both artists and attendees.
What’s next for you?
Next for me is an exciting journey filled with upcoming projects and releases. In Fall 2023, I’ll be releasing my EP titled “Black Diamonds,” which will showcase a unique blend of sounds and storytelling. Following that, in the fall, I have another EP set to be released, bringing even more musical experiences to my listeners. Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be releasing a single for an upcoming movie at the end of the year, adding another dimension to my artistic endeavors.
Throughout this journey, I’m committed to staying true to myself and doing things my way. I won’t conform or try to fit into any preconceived molds. It’s important to me to create music that resonates with authenticity and speaks to the hearts of those who listen. This is a marathon, not a race, and I’m excited to take each step along the way, embracing the opportunities and challenges that come my way.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from this project?
The message I hope my fans take away from my music and this project is simple: let’s have fun together. I want to create an atmosphere where we can enjoy the present moment, celebrate life, and let loose. This project, especially being released during the summer, is all about embracing the joyous moments before we return to our daily routines and responsibilities.
I want my music to be a soundtrack to unforgettable memories, spontaneous adventures, and carefree experiences. It’s about living life to the fullest and being present in the moment. This message applies not only to my fans but also to myself. I believe that by immersing ourselves in the present, we can fully appreciate the beauty and excitement that surrounds us. So let’s come together, have an amazing time, and make lasting memories.
