FINNEAS’ Gives Refreshing Evolution with ‘For Cryin’ Out Loud!’
Finneas, known for his exceptional collaborations and work alongside his sister Billie Eilish, delivers his second solo album, For Cryin’ Out Loud!. The album opens with the melodramatic track “Starfucker,” a piano ballad that reflects self-pity as Finneas laments his experiences with the elite. He sings, “Cartier around your wrist/I was such an optimist/But you were such a narcissist,” setting a somewhat self-indulgent tone. However, the album quickly transitions to showcase the versatility and artistry of this pop savant.
Following his 2021 debut, Optimist, which contained thought-provoking songs like the Covid-themed “A Concert Six Months From Now,” Finneas has shifted to a more eclectic and relaxed approach in For Cryin’ Out Loud! The album balances elements of the shadowy alt-pop style present in Billie’s 2024 release, Hit Me Hard and Soft, albeit with a less captivating presence at its core.

Tracks like “Lotus Eater” exhibit an Eighties-inspired sound with a catchy melody, while “Little Window” evokes the acoustic intimacy reminiscent of Feist or Bon Iver. “Same Old Story” starts as a moody piano piece but builds into a sweeping showcase that maintains clarity. Lighter moments arise in tracks like “Cleats,” which cleverly plays with its soccer theme, and “Sweet Cherries” and “2001,” which offer elegant melodies fitting for a Harry Styles album.
Despite showcasing a range of emotions, For Cryin’ Out Loud! sometimes feels more like a well-crafted job application rather than a statement of unique artistic vision. Yet, the album’s most poignant moment arrives in “Family Feud,” an acoustic reflection on his deep bond with Billie. The song’s tender portrayal of their relationship is heartfelt and genuine, reminding listeners of the importance of such connections.
Finneas describes the creative process behind this album as more collaborative than his previous work, stating, “The majority of the record was written as we played together, a process I hadn’t done since high school.” This youthful energy is reminiscent of early Coldplay and noughties soft rock, marking a departure from the expansive electronic sound he explored with Billie.

While For Cryin’ Out Loud! may not be as experimental as his debut, it demonstrates a clearer direction, even if it occasionally leans toward formulaic arrangements. Finneas expressed his desire for connection, saying, “This album, I was like, I want to sit across the table from people and talk right to them and not be preachy at all.” He aims to convey his personal experiences rather than striving for universal truths.
Finneas’ artistry shines in this sophomore effort, proving that he is more than just a supporting player in the world of pop music. With his talent as a writer and producer, he has made a significant mark alongside Billie Eilish, contributing to her acclaimed discography, including the hit albums When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, Happier Than Ever, and Hit Me Hard and Soft.
