This collaboration, which unites two major fintech players under Block Inc., is designed to bring buy now, pay later (BNPL) services to an even larger audience. By combining forces, the two companies aim to connect hundreds of thousands of merchants to Cash App’s massive and engaged consumer base, predominantly consisting of tech-savvy Gen Z users who favor flexible and digital-first payment solutions.

Expanding Merchant Access and Consumer Options

With Afterpay now part of Cash App, merchants who offer BNPL options can tap into Cash App’s vast network. Cash App boasts 57 million active monthly users, along with 25 million monthly active Cash App Card users, providing a significant opportunity for growth.

Nick Molnar, global head of sales at Block and cofounder of Afterpay, shared that Cash App’s large and active user base means merchants can now reach a broader group of potential customers. In turn, consumers gain access to more straightforward and fair payment methods beyond traditional credit systems. Molnar believes this integration will significantly drive Cash App’s growth and fuel the rising demand for BNPL services in the U.S.

Empowering Merchants and Enhancing Consumer Experience

Tanuj Parikh, head of revenue for Afterpay and Cash App in North America, emphasized that the merger will help retail partners reach a wider customer base and grow their sales. He pointed out that consumers will now benefit from easy access to Afterpay’s BNPL service wherever Cash App is integrated, giving them greater flexibility with their spending.

Parikh also highlighted that Millennials and Gen Z in particular are increasingly leaning toward BNPL solutions rather than traditional credit, allowing for more responsible spending while providing greater liquidity for a variety of purchases.

Consumer Trust and Brand Authority

Both Afterpay and Cash App have earned the trust of consumers in recent years. In 2023, Cash App was ranked among the top five most authentic brands for Gen Z by YPulse, while Afterpay was recognized as the most trusted BNPL provider by Afterpay and Oxford Economics.

Interestingly, Parikh revealed that the majority of Cash App’s users have never used Afterpay before, making this partnership an exciting opportunity to meet the growing demand for alternative payment methods. He believes that this collaboration will fulfill Cash App customers’ desire for simple, reliable, and flexible payment options outside of traditional credit.

Launching the “Cash In” Campaign

To highlight the benefits of the new integration, Cash App is set to launch a nationwide marketing campaign called “Cash In.” The campaign will feature videos that showcase the growing range of banking services available on Cash App and the seamless connection between both platforms. This initiative aims to further demonstrate how Cash App can help users make the most of their money and enhance their financial experience.
